I love listening to Kali Willows weekly blogtalk radio show Between Moonlit Covers, and was thrilled when my editor guested on the show. Imagine my surprise (and delight) to hear a great shout out for Dracula's Kiss and then a wonderful little discussion about my selkies and SEAL THE DEAL Thrilled. I was so thrilled.

#Goodreads should come with a warning label. NOT FOR AUTHORS

Yeah. We say it all the time. Goodreads isn't for authors.
But heck, it's where a ton of readers hang out so...

EXACTLY. It's where readers hang out. Not authors.
But authors are readers, too, so this makes for a difficult challenge.

Readers like to chat about current reads whether they be loving or hating them, and the majority  don't know the authors personally so they don't owe them special howdy-do-dee politeness yet they manage to hold a bookish conversation with thoughtfulness and manners. While others can be darn right mean.

Authors like to check out their latest reviews and encourage people to add their books to their lists/read their work. And once upon a time, we used to enjoy interacting with readers of our work on there, too. Because of the minority of readers and authors behaving badly on there, it's not an advised practice anymore.

Times have changed.

Goodreads is not author friendly. Think of Goodreads as the sounding board for readers. It's a READER site. Be there as a reader and be the good author and upload your books to stock the database, but don't be chatting with your author hat on unless in an author-aimed group. You may not like what you hear.

Goodreads.

The place where authors go to thicken their skin.

Yes. The whole "I'm not publishing my debut book because I got bullied on Goodreads' is the reason for this post. In short, a newb self-pubber asked why her not-yet-released book had been down-rated.A simple enough question, right? But some readers didn't think so. She should have pulled up her big girl pants and walked away. Instead, she up-rated said book with five stars from two different profiles. This of course enraged the already pissed-off readers. Heated discussions exploded in the review threads and links made their way to Facebook and Twitter. Everyone was chatting about this last night. It was painful. I couldn't watch. I felt bad for the author, but I also wondered why she wasn't making good on a bad situation. Think about it? With all talking about this, in a few hours, her book when from a shoddy 2 stars to a solid 4 1/2 stars. If she had any sense, she'd get that book out TODAY. Talk about no publicity is bad publicity.

Nope. I'm not mentioning names. And nope I'm not providing a link.

I'm just going to pass on some Goodreads survival tips.
  • After you've added your book/s to the database, leave your author hat at the door.
  • Don't rate your own book. It's tacky as shite and tells readers your book holds those same qualities.
  • Don't comment on reviews/add to reader discussions of books you authored UNLESS you've been invited to. You don't want to stifle readers from chatting about your work. Often, when reminded an author is watching, a discussion can become stilted or heated. Why would you want that?
  • Grow a thick skin. Goodreads is full of wonderful readers who adore interacting with authors, unfortunately, the bitter and ill-mannered few have made this an impossible feature of Goodreads.
What about you? Got any thoughts on Goodreads and how best to approach the author/reader divide happening on  there?

All tied up... in Six Lengths of Red Hemp. Reading for Charity.

Rope Image by Keerati
Tilly Hunter ties us up good and proper with Six Lengths of Red Hemp, her story in the charity anthology COMING TOGETHER, With Curves. (in print and ebook)

She ties us up, and entangles us deep into the erotic scene between artist and subject. There's no getting away from how deeply engaging this story is; every knot, every wrap...we feel it all thanks to Ms. Hunter's rich descriptions. This is one hot little number that kicks off the With Curves charity anthology that benefits PARKINSON'S UK. Iced drink was needed before I moved on to the next story.

My favorite snippet from Six Lengths of Red Hemp
(clean snippet, anyway LOL)

This mini excerpt is PG 13 rated. Please be aware that the anthology is rated R/adult and is not suitable for minors due to sexual content and language.

His print of Women After Bathing by Renoir was the one he loved the best, the long slope of the woman's back under her piled-up hair. Louisa soon realised she didn't have to settle for the hope that her personality wold dazzle him into forgetting she wasn't built like a supermodel. Dan had first struck up a conversation precisely because of that fact.
Most of all, he loved to blindfold her, then tie her in intricate shibari in front of the full-length mirror in their bedroom. The ropes would vibrate against Lousia's body as he pulled each length through, the weave rubbing against itself and thrumming through her skin. She would try to guess where the rope would be wound next.

Tilly Hunter is a British erotica writer. Of course, that's not her real name, but it's the one she uses when she wants to write filthy stories full of BDSM, chicken coops and pure new wool. Her first solo collection of short stories, Miranda's Tempest, is out now at Amazon and other online bookstores.  You can connect with with Tilly on Twitter @TillyHErotica or at her blog http://tillyhuntererotica.blogspot.com/

Tomorrow, review and snippet from the next story in COMING TOGETHER; With Curves -- Cross Trainer Number Four by Lily Harlem

Reading for charity! COMING TOGETHER; With Curves

Available at Smashwords Amazon.com for JUST $2.99, Amazon.co.uk for £1.98.
Curves also will soon be available from Create Space as a paperback!

My contribution to this wicked collection of shorts for charity is called BELLA BUXOM, Just Squeeze Me...

Exclusive sneak look right here, right now!

BLURB
Charlie’s in love with Bella Buxom. Can't focus on his work, can't go a day without seeing her. He’s never met her, mind, just admired her afar for the last year. When his dream woman steps off the burlesque stage and into his life, is she more woman than he can handle?

EXCERPT is NOT suitable for minors. (language and sexual references)
The ANTHOLOGY is 18+  only due to adult language and sexual content.

The buxom beauty gyrates to the smooth jazz tune, her red locks swishing with the movement. And her breasts, sh*t, I'm unable to take my gaze off her sun-kissed breasts. I can't help but wonder how those sparkly circles stick to her nipples. Glue? Are her nubs red and tender after a show? Oh, I'd love a chance to kiss them better.
"Here's your drink, Charlie." The cute waitress who usually serves on Wednesdays slides a cola and whisky in front of me. "Bella's good tonight, right?" she says, before scurrying to the bar tucked away in the back of London's side-street burlesque club.
"Always is." I call after her.
I down half the drink then snap my attention back to the goddess on stage. I question why I've never had a voluptuous lover. I reckon I'd enjoy spanking a robust bottom and massaging huge tits. Even just gazing upon a curvaceous lass such as this, all wanton and sprawled out on my bed, would be a treat.
Damn, Bella Buxom is fine! Forties pin-up girl perfection, with dips and curves I could happily die for.
The dancer trips over an oversized dildo, bringing her hand to her mouth in a 'oops' gesture. An infectious giggle spreads through the audience, and the bloke behind is hysterical. I turn to offer a scowl in hopes of shaming him into shutting up. But I notice it's Steven, another regular at the place. He's huge, nose crooked like it's been broken. I nod in acknowledgment and decide to deal rather than ask the hulk to shut the hell up. I prefer watching Bella over causing hassle.
She's now acting shocked over the width and length of the adult toy. Ha, this girl is adorable. Such confidence to bare all, well, practically all, while making fun of sex. Not like some cheap stripper. Nope. Her act is tasteful in a playful, smutty kinda way. And she can sing. Bloody hell, can she sing.
Shimmying across the stage, making full comedic use of nearby props, she sings the classy jazz song Just Squeeze Me in seductive tones. The lights dim. A pale-blue spotlight illuminates her, casts shadows over her curves. Her pout is even more seductive now. I'm in awe. Maybe in love. The sweet sounds of her rich, velvet voice wraps around me and takes a hold. Talk about smitten, I feel like a teenager jonesing for my first celebrity crush; Rose McGowan, the red head from Charmed.
She blows kisses...at me? Huh. I'm sure it's me she's flashing her big blues at. Conscious I'm gawking, I glance at my co- workers also here to enjoy the show. Their mouths are open, too.
The red curtain falls and the house lights go up. The audience hoots their delight, but the show is over. No more Bella Buxom for tonight.

My #DecadentJourney with @decadentpub complete with BLOOPERS! #DecadentAuthors

DROP BY THE DAILY DOSE OF DECADENT BLOG for more

All through 18th April,  the authors of Decadent Publishing are coming together to share their DECADENT JOURNEY. We'll be giving a behind the scenes look at how our books were produced and to offer insider tips for would-be authors hoping to submit to Decadent Publishing. From first contracts to exciting edits, and hilarious bloopers…we're dishing it all! And we're chatting on twitter - #decadentauthors #decadentjourney

So pull up a comfy chair, grab yourself a tasty drink and something to nibble on…and let's get started!

If a new-to-you author, let me dish a bit about myself: I write mostly contemporary romance with a few paranormals thrown in there - my stories are usually set in Britain or have British characters. I think I'm mostly known for my Irish Kisses series with Decadent Publishing.

DECADENT LOVE

sweet irish kiss download pdf by joanne kenrick, bestselling irish kisses series romanc
I fricken love Decadent Publishing and everyone who works relentless behind the scenes to make my books shine. Heather and Lisa always answer any questions I have (even my silly questions) without judgement and always with a helpful, heartful attitude. And Valerie, the woman with many hats, does so much for Decadent I'm surprised she even knows what day it is sometimes. Then there's my editors. I heart my editors to death and then some. Yes, this chickadee is proud to be a Decadent author. And honored.

How about we start at...THE BEGINNING

I began my journey as a published fiction writer with Decadent when they accepted When A Mullo Loves A Woman back in late 2010, which was my first finished work of fiction. Looking back now, it was a small-big actually-miracle my story was accepted. I'll be forever grateful they took a chance on lil old inexperienced me. And thank goodness Decadent welcomed me into their arms and nurtured me into the author I am today, because my work was a sham. Terrible! Filled with all the big no-nos and then some. Holy heck did my very first round of edits come as a big shock to me. Editing quickly became my favorite part of the publishing process.

BLOOPERS!
Since my first story, I've written several more and have several hundred more to go. My favorite part of
being a published author has always been the editing process - I'm a sponge when it comes to editing, and adore seeing the progress to make my work shine and my future works better. With each new round of edits comes a new lesson for me as an author and reader to learn and put into practice.
Along the way, my wonderful DP editors have caught some fantastic mistakes. What the heck, I've already embarrassed myself, might as well go all the way... I stand here before you, completely naked, as I share my boo-boos for you all to giggle at from various stories... I know. I know. I hang my head in shame...but I also giggle away at my own daftness.

Hey, if I laugh, too, it means you're laughing with me and not at me.these beauts were caught by the awesome Kate Richards and are from various books:

Rachel grasped a plastic body, wiped away a trickled tear, and sniffled back her feelings

Sounds like the tear is on the mannequin

His hair sat on his head all skewed to the right

Hopefully it’s always on his head.

He explored her tonsils with his tongue like a pro

Maybe not…

G-string hiding in the crevasse of her sex
A crevasse is an opening of considerable depth and width, like a canyon. Crevice, perhaps?

Erm, a blindfold, vibrator, and anal beads

 Joanne! Way to go wild
Okay, so I included this one just because it's my favorite editorial comment to date. It was for Sweet Irish Kiss.

A sense of freedom enveloped her. And her limps, out wide and balletic in their movement, expressed her elation.

Limps?

Estella rose, smoothed out her wrinkles, and twisted her mouth into a smirk.

How did she do that?
Dunno, but if I ever figure it out, I'll be loaded!

He moved in close, his eyes squinting as if he planned on kissing her.

Why is squinting a signal of a kiss?

Here’s our room

How does he know?

He can totally read my mind. Oh…a male sookie. Shush, plot bunnies, not now!

He leaned closer, his moustache brushing her cheek and whispered,

His moustache is whispering?
It's that super hero dude again, the one who can read minds.

She cried out his name, feeling the orgasm grow inside her, bubbling in her stomach and burning the soles of her feet

Sounds sort of diseaselike.

MY ADVICE

Before you hit send, go through your manuscript and listen to it with a text to voice program for one more round of edits. It's amazing the little things you can catch when you can HEAR your story being read. If you don't have a text to speech program, try reading your story from end to the beginning, sentence by sentence; this allows you to focus on the technical stuff rather than the story; you'll catch more mistakes that way.

If I was to give any one piece of advise to an author hoping to be published with Decadent, it would be to be prepared to listen to your editor, and to not take editor comments to heart or as a personal attack on yourself. Editor comments are there to make your work shine and be the best it can be. Also, during the editing process, make notes. Lots of notes. And make a list of your noticed repetitive words. Oh, and ask questions. Lost of questions. Never sit on a concern and worry yourself. I've found my editors and publishers always happy to answer questions if they are able to.

MY LATEST DECADENT STORY TO BE ACCEPTED

It's not all bad, though. I am learning so much from Kate, my editor at Decadent. Look...see.. here's an exclusive excerpt from upcoming SEAL THE DEAL, Isle of Man and Selkie book one, a Decadent Publishing 1NS story. And it's unedited. Raw. Yes, I'm showing it all today! Dirty laundry and all. Why the heck am I doing that? Because I wanted to show how much Decadent has drummed, erm, I mean taught, me.

Finn Kneale didn’t think another lunar eclipse on February 29th would be possible, yet there it was, hanging over the ocean like a dimmed lantern, the ring in the sky his last—and only—chance to undo the oceanic spell shrouding him in misery. Sliding from his watch-point rock a few miles out from the little tourist trap where he had lived for most of his life, he delved into the depths of the Irish Sea. Water lapped, and he twisted, clapping flippers over the seafoam. Waves crashed over his mottled grey and black seal self. Excitement rushed through him and exited in a loud, brassy roar, then he unleashed another and another, each increasing in volume for the benefit of his aquatic friends. The barking, intended as an announcement, told the world Finn hoped to meet his mate tonight.
He floated in shallows, waiting, watching as the old, white lighthouse fluctuated in and out of existence. The sliver of moonlight cast a silvery light over the once-in-ruins building sitting proud again, high on the cliff’s edge. Its beacon shined bright, yet the gray sky pitched gloom below. There was all but twenty-four hours to seal the deal—as long as the lighthouse stood—then the energy balance would return to normal along the rocky shores of the Isle of Man, the historical maritime building vanishing once again. At least, that’s what his father had relayed every morning for the last four years.
Shimmying his slippery body across the pebbled beach of Port St. Mary, he took cover between tall, bulky rocks for the transformation. Safely hidden, he squeezed his eyelids closed and tried to envision his human self. Too much time had passed; he wasn’t sure his memory was close to the mark.
Think, Finn, think.
Soft cotton towels against his whiskers, the warm touch of the sun on his shoulders as he worked the farm, tasty homemade soup tangy on his tongue. Soft flesh of a woman beneath him. Oh, to be admired for his manliness rather than his cutesy seal features and bubble blowing talents. Fragmented recollections of the little things was all that had survived years of watching the shoreline.

Lucky In Love - And Some Irish Kisses

WINNER!C D Krystal -- check your inbox xx

Out of courtesy to the entrants, I've hidden the comments section since so many of you added in an email address >> would hate to be the cause of you getting hit by spammers.

Many thanks to everyone who stopped by, and to Carrie Anne for bringing us all together for a rockin' lucky blog hop! WOOT

Happy Irish Week! Yeah, I know St. Pat's is just one day. But don't you just love how the days leading up to this day is one big happy go lucky week? *BIG GRIN*
The blog topic for this hop organized by the lovely Carrie Ann Ryan is Lucky in Love. But before I go there... how about you get lucky in books? There's two ways that can happen! Yeah, the leprechauns have been sprinkling their gold all over my blog.
First - there's a brand new Irish Kisses book out,
FREE! It's book five. BUT it really can be read as a stand alone. Second. I'm giving away one lucky winner any ebook from my backlist. Yup ANY book from my backlist. Excluding all the Irish Kisses books. (CLICK THE LUCKY IN LOVE BLOG HOP IMAGE TO GO A HOPPING!)

LUCKY IN LOVE
Okay. So I've got loads I could talk about here, because I do feel uber lucky in love. I struck gold with my hubs. And I knew it on our first date. We have so much in common. But the first ka-ching! moment, what made me think this could be something serious, was when I discovered he also had a dislike for sports...esp football (soccer). Yeah. I'd had boyfriends in the past when lager and football was the be all and end all of everything. I'd had enough of that British lager-lout attitude and wanted a REAL man. And oh boy did I get my wish.
Not only do we have lots in common, but he's a sweetie pie. Really. He is. Sure, he knows how to rub me up the wrong way (as I do him) and yeah, his bad habits frustrate the heck out of me (as I'm sure mine do him) but he is always there for me. Always thinking of me before himself. And that's why I believe I am LUCKY IN LOVE.
Oh. And he's Welsh, too - Welsh Kisses for me! <<< oh, sound like a new series? LOL Mind you, the Welsh are more prone to drinking tea than whisky or Irish cream. Not so sexy. hehe

And I just love sharing the romance happies in my stories.
Talking of which...here's the latest. And did I mention, it's FREE!

 FREE READ!

Life couldn't be more perfect. Liz Grant has it all; a starring role in a major motion picture, a fabulous apartment central-London, and a great boyfriend who knows how to mix a mean cocktail and make her come with a flick of a switch. He works for Bell's Irish Pub, so she gets free drinks, too!

A surprise for St. Patrick's day. There's just one problem. Devlin Kinney wants to marry her. Like, now. And rip her away from her glamorous life. Why? So they can live happily ever after in a wee country cottage in the heart of Belfast, Ireland. What’s a city girl to do? He is Irish. And he does have a certain way with words. And vibrating toys. But does she love him enough to leave the comforts of England? And is there something behind his sudden proposal?

And now for a giggle! I made this trailer esp for this blog hop - yes. I put myself out there and showed the world JoAnne Kenrick CANNOT draw! LOL But it was a lot of fun trying ;) CLICK PLAY to giggle along and take a trip down Irish Kisses memory lane.

PROMO images - feel free to share them about as you wish. No. Really. Please. DO! hehe They're great for spreading the word on facebook, twitter, and your blogs.
Show the boys from Bell's from love.

WIN! COMMENT. That easy. Just comment. If we're not on any social networks together, or your blogger profile doesn't contain your email or a way to get in touch, please be sure to pop back to this post at the end of the blog to check if you won. You've got 48hrs to claim your prize. If I've not heard from you, or can't find a way to contact you, I'll pick another winner. What's the prize? An ebook from my backlist. Any ebook except an Irish Kisses book.
