Lightning by Taryn Kincaid
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Lightning by Taryn Kincaid had me right from the opening sentence, and I was pulled into Taryn's world of Sleepy hollow all over again; just like I was in Sleepy Hollow Dreams.

Oh. MY. GOSH! This story is hilarious. It's smoking hot. And a most excellent addition to the 1Night Stand series.

I loved the cooky twilight references.

“Lil’s whiter than Edward Cullen and you’re talking about where her diploma should go? It’s like the blind leading the sexless.”

And Lily's interaction with her succubi sisters is so natural and snarky. And their sexual antics had me laughing so hard!

Dag. Hate to feast and run, but something’s just come up.

Mortals. Bleh.

But it's not all about the laughs. Oh no. Campbell is delicious.

“I am your date, baby.” His sensual whisper blazed through her like a jolt of electricity, doing tantalizing things to her heart and mind. “Last chance to back out. If you want to.”

Lily and Campbell together are HAWT!

 No Dogs Allowed by Nicole Hicks
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Never have I howled this much while reading a short story before. Ms. Hicks surely did pack in the snark and snap in this 1 Night Stand Story. Not only did she have me laughing so hard I almost spat coffee at my reader, but she brought the heat and romance, too.
One of my new favorite 1NS books, for sure.

Hi fellow Sunday snippet writers and readers...thanks for stopping by my blog this week!

For this weeks six, I jumped ahead a bit from my last snippet (scroll down my blog's home page to find the previous TWO snippets from this manuscript. Finn has now made the change from seal to human, and, well, the rest kinda speaks for its self. I hope you enjoy. FYI still no submission news to share yet so keep those fingers crossed for me ;)

Minutes later, he arrived at his parent’s stone cottage. Once a home for the lighthouse keeper, it now served as a modest farmhouse. Inside, he expected to find a pitiful fire in the hearth, not quite crackling, with his mother at the table figuring out some jigsaw puzzle while snuggled in a huge, thick sweater. His father with his feet up, enjoying some comedy show on the old television with a tartan blanket over his knees; a typical scene after a long day hauling arse around the farm. He turned the handle, opened the green door, and inched forward. Rich burgundy colors and scents of apple pie and fresh bread greeted him.

Last week--for the last official Six Sunday post (wah) -- I shared the opening scene from what was a work-in-progress. Seal the Deal, Isle of Man and Selkie book one, is now out on submission with Decadent Publishing (cross ya fingers for me).

I thought I'd carry on from almost where I left of. So...here it is. Finn Kneale is prepping for 'the change' viable due to the energy shift of the Isle and the leap year eclipse.

Soft cotton towels against his whiskers, the warm touch of the sun on his shoulders as he worked the farm, tasty homemade soup tangy on his tongue. Soft flesh of a woman beneath him. Oh, to be admired for his manliness rather than his cutesy seal features and bubble blowing talents. Fragmented recollections of the little things was all that had survived years of watching the shoreline.

Who does this guy think he is? She tried to will herself to fight him off then run like the wind. But her goth self—and the Dracula’s Kisses he’d mixed for her— enticed her to stay wrapped in his arms and enjoy the sense of safe-danger he seemed to offer. This was what she wanted to happen when she took the path down here, if she was honest with herself. She recalled how she’d felt him following her, and how the silly girl in her pretended to run from him. She’d beckoned this to happen. It hadn’t been a drunken, made-up game after all.

She tried to make sense of the whys and whens until he slid his hand over her curves and toward her sex. The thin, imitation silk ruffled under his touch and slipped over her skin. He pressed his fingers taut against her clit and cupped her soft, swollen mound, caressing her. She leaned her head back, steadying her weight against him. No more thinking. Her eyes closed with the ecstasy and her muscles tensed in anticipation of release, pulling at her stomach and making her toes curl in response.

“We shouldn’t do this. I have no idea who you are or anything, and....”

Pathetic, Cathela, you are pathetic. How about you say no and move away from the hot vampire? That would help. Yes, it would.

“And yet here ye are, moaning in delight, begging me tae continue.”

And I have a boyfriend called...something? What was his name again?

He swiped her hair across her shoulder and planted sweet kisses along her exposed neck. She couldn’t believe it, her fantasy had come true. While she tried to figure out what she had done to deserve such pleasure, he pierced her skin with his teeth and clutched his fingers onto her like a cat kneading. His sharp nails scratched the surface of her costume, and his embrace, intense and full of passion, scared her. She’d let it go too far.

“I can’t do this. I’m taken.” She pushed him away, panting, gasping for air and sensibility. Nick wasn’t perfect, and was probably upstairs flirting with the witch that very minute. But they were, for all intents and purposes, still living together and in love...weren’t they?

Alec Murray, the Scottish vampire with a kiss to die for

Alec Murray, from Dracula's Kiss, is at my blog today...with a kiss to die for! So pucker up!

Dracula's Kiss Recipe:

1. Coat the bottom of a glass with grenadine.
2. Add ice and the black cherry vodka
3. Fill with cola
4. Garnish with maraschino cherries.

And here is the man himself, well, the man who inspired Alec Murray--it always amazes me how talented folks are in youtube with their music video editing skills. This is one of my favorite tributes to Stuart Townsend's Lestat.

I mean, what would your reaction be if you came across this man during a ball held in castle ruins connected to Bram Stoker's Dracula?

Oh, and he's dressed as Dracula. I guess he might look something like this but with a top hat and those funky-cool glasses.

Would you cease the opportunity? Cathela, the female lead in Dracula's Kiss, is suitably hesitant considering she's already involved. But how long can one resist his beauty? What finally sends her over the edge? What would it take for you to sweep back your hair and invite a Dracula's Kiss, or two?

This is the deleted scene that inspired the whole story of Dracula's Kiss, and the reason why Lestat played a huge roll in creating Alec Murray. QOFTD is a favorite movie of mine. Not for it's plot, yes I get that it's full of holes and the ending made no sense, but the whole 'feel' of the movie, the atmosphere from music and clothes to the cinematography and goth essence throughout. It's one of those movies that invokes all that I love about vampires. It's a shame they deleted this extending flying sequence, because it adds that little bit of extra connection between Lestat and Jessie, and might have made that ending seem less redonkulas.

He read the letter and slid into the chair at the family meeting. With a shudder, he met his son’s eyes and sighed. They all watched him, waiting. She wanted this? His beloved wife, gone three years? It was a useless gesture, but he wouldn’t deny the attempt. One date, to satisfy Maria. But that was all. He swore it.

He reached out to touch the silk at her knee, his fingers sliding along her leg. “I remember a song lyric, from years ago…. In a silk dress running like a watercolor in the rain. This fits that line sublimely.”

“Al Stewart, Year of the Cat.” She put her hand on his. “I thought the same when I purchased it. Wildly impractical, but impossible to resist.”

“That describes you perfectly.”

She said nothing, just watched and waited. Then slowly she took his hand and raised it to her lips, kissed his fingertips, and smiled.

Blood roared through his body. He freed his hand, took her wine glass and set it aside with his. He had to touch her. Lifting his hand he touched her cheek and she closed her eyes, leaned into his palm.

A kiss like nothing he’d ever experienced. Her lips parted to his quickly, her breath filled his mouth as he gently inhaled, holding her head still so he could explore at his leisure. A hunger rose held back too long and he let his hand wander to her head, through the mess of artfully arranged layers, so many layers! He shifted and she went with him. Before he realized it, he lay half on top of her, one hand cupping her breast while the other wrapped around her shoulders. Her head rested on his upper arm as the kiss continued.

She moaned, her hand spread at his chest, fingers clenching slightly. He could feel her fingernails through the thin cotton of his shirt.

He cleared his throat. “Are you, uh, waiting for somebody?”
She blinked at him and frowned at the mostly empty glass in front of her. “Yes. A date.” She tossed him a wry smile. “But he didn’t show up.” She glanced at the watch on her wrist. “He’s an hour late now.”

Cameron’s brows lowered in disbelief. Who would leave someone so beautiful and intelligent hanging that way? “I seriously hope he’s in the hospital or being mugged downtown or some other catastrophic event. He better have a damn good excuse.”
Ginger laughed and swallowed the last of her drink, her expression dark with sadness as she faced him again. “Thank you for that. I don’t know why he didn’t show. We were set up through a dating service.”
Madame Eve. Cameron struggled with the thought that she had to be set up on a date. The woman was bangin’ hot and knew people. It amazed him that she didn’t already have a family, let alone a boyfriend. Ginger quirked a sleek auburn brow at him. “You’re wondering why I employed a dating service.” She raised a smooth shoulder delicately, the silver chain at her throat glinting in the low light. “I wanted somebody with more substance than I could find in my circles. Most of the guys I know are either too full of themselves, freaks, or too scared to ask me out. I needed somebody objective to help out and guide me in the right direction.” Resignation tightened her features.
“Worked great, huh?”
Cameron’s jaded heart shuddered at her obvious disappointment. But he could understand her reasoning. And he could certainly sympathize with the men. Honestly, he didn’t know if he had the balls to ask her out. You’re on duty, asshole. You can’t. He’d been asked to work the night shift tonight for a reason. Surely he’d located the woman Madame had told him to watch for. He pulled his cell phone out and typed off a quick text, letting Mike know he was going off shift. He offered Ginger a slight smile, just enough for the scar to tug at his lips.

Taking a deep breath and his courage in hand, he asked her, “Can I buy you a coffee?”

I was a deputy sheriff in Ohio for nine years, and I found myself tapping that experience as I wrote Second Time Around. No, I didn't tackle and cuff my husband, although there was that time in K-mart... Anyway, it was quite a change going from writing technical reports with diagrams, witness statements, inventories etc that would stand up in court to writing contemporary romance. I've always written, though, and it was not something I could just turn off. I have stacks of spiral bound notebooks attesting to the fact that I can't shut that side of myself off.
